THE STRUCTURE OF THE GIANT DIPOLE RESONANCE. I. PROTON CAPTURE BY LIGHT NUCLEI

Journal Article · · Nuclear Physics (Netherlands) Divided into Nucl. Phys. A and Nucl. Phys. B
The giant dipole resonances of several light nuclei were studied by using the inverse (p, gamma ) reaction. Good energy resolution was achieved by using the proton beam of a Tandem Electrostatic Generator. The excitation functions at 90 deg to the beam for the gamma rays leading to the ground state are presented for the reactions /sup 7/Li(p, gamma )/sup 8/Be, /sup 18/F(p, gamma )/sup 20/Ne and /sup 39/K(p, gamma )/sup 40/Ca. The excitation functi on for gamma rays to the first excited state is aiso given for /sup 7/Li(p, gamma )/sup 8/Be and /sup 19/F(p, gamma )/sup 20/Ne. Data by other workers on proton capture in the region of the dipole resonance are assembled and briefly reviewed. The light nuclei /sup 4/He and /sup 8/Be show no structure; generally, the structure increases in amount and decreases in width as the heaviness of the nucleus being studied increases. The main features of the shell-model calculations for the simple nuclei, /sup 12/C and /sup 16/O, are confirmed but there is more detail than is yet predicted by theory. The dipole resonance based on the first excited state of several nuclei is displaced upwards in energy by the excitation energy of the state. 45 references. (auth)
