A simplified model is presented of ionizing shock waves in a magnetic field which is tangential to the shock front. In this model, the gas ahead of the shock is assumed to be a perfect nonconductor and that behind a perfect conductor, and the energy required in the ionization process is ignored. Differences that would have arisen in the results if the assumptions were less simplified are discussed. The jump conditions across the shock are discussed, and it is shown that the shock structure relationships are indeed jump conditions. Some numerical results are presented for the piston problem.
