An apparatus for generating, heating, and containing a plasma is designed in which the plasma is maintained free from contamination and is subjected to extremely intense heating. Plasma contamination by insulators is prevented by generating the plasma in a pinch tube and then removing the portion of the plasma adjacent the insulators. Maximum heating is obtained by delaying the formation of the plasma column until the peak current is passing through the device. The apparatus comprises a closed outer conducting cylinder with one of the ends being an insulator, an inner conducting cylinder within the outer cylinder and transpiercing the insulator, a disk electrode spaced from the end of the inner cylinder, and conductors connecting the disk electrode with the outer cylinder. The operation of the apparatus is discussed. (D.L.C.)
