A remotely operable device is designed for cutting thermocouple cables for removal from channels of gascooled reactors. The device is threaded on the cable and lowered into the channel until it contacts the end fitting on a fuel element, and gas pressure is used to actuate the shearing means. The device is then withdrawn with the clamped cut cable by means of a shielded winch unit described in British Patent 953,232. (D.L.C.)
