CONTROL DEVICE FOR NUCLEAR REACTORS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4028417
A control device for a nuclear reactor consisting of a control element adapted to be introduced into a vertical reactor channel was designed. A series of neutron absorbing annular discs were joined together to form a chainlike element adapted to be folded up. This element is disposed at the upper end of the reactor channel, so that it has a compact shape as the discs form a pile. A rod passing through the openings of the discs is provided at its lower end with means for retaining the lowest disc of the pile to retain the element in its compact shape. The rod is held in position by a breakable element and pushes at its upper end against a bellow. In case of a sudden pressure loss in the reactor the bellows expands and breaks the retaining elemert so that the rod falls down and releases the control element which unfolds itself downwards into the reactor channel.
