IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO GAS COOLED NUCLEAR REACTORS
Ae gas-cooled reactor is described particularly with attention being concerned with the withdrawal of the fuel elements. The pressure vessel contains a reactcr core, fuel element channels orientated in the core, shielding for the core, access takes projecting through the pressure vessel and shielding to give access to the fuel element channels, and a shield plug in each access tube. Each shield plug is connected to an assembly of at least one fuel element, whereby withdrawal of a selected shield plug from its normal position in the respective access tube causes withdrawal of the fuel element assembly from the core. Withdrawal of the shield plug is by employment of coolant pressure on a piston connected to the plug and associated with a detachable extension of the access tube. (N.W.R.)
