ABSOLUTE CROSS SECTION FOR THE C$sup 12$ (p,pn)C$sup 11$ REACTION AT 50 Mev

Absolute cross sections for the C/sup 12/(p,pn)C/sup 11/ reaction at proton energies between 21 and 50.5 Mev were measured at the Brookhaven Linac. Beam intensity was measured with a Faraday cup and the C/sup 11/ induced in polyethylene foils was assayed in a calibrated well-type scintillation counter. Corrections for C/sup 11/ gas loss from the foils were applied. The C/sup 12/ (p,pn)C/sup 11/ cross section at 50.5 Mev is 86.4 plus or minus 2.6 mb. Absolute cross sections for Na/sup 24/ and Na/sup 22/ production from aluminium were also measured at several energies. (auth)
