AL$sup 27$(p,3pn)Na$sup 24$$C$$sup 12$(p,pn)C$sup 11$CROSS-SECTION RATIO IN THE Gev REGION

The Al/sup 27/ (p,3pn)Na/sup 24//C/sup 12/9p,pn) C/sup 11/ cross-section ratio h as been measured at nine energies between 0.4 and 17 Bev. Corrections have been applied for the loss of C/sup 11/ by diffusion from the thin plastic foils which were, used and the effects of this loss on existing data are discussed. From the measured ratios and published absolute cross sections for the C/sup 12/(p,pn)C/sup 11/ reaction, an excitation function for the standard monitor re action, Al/sup 27/ (p,3pn)Na/sup 24/, was obtained. The cross section a 3 Bev was found to be 9.1 plus or minus 0.5 mb, lower than the previously accepted value of 10.5 mb. Cross sections relative to the Al/sup 27/(p,3pn)Na/ sup 24/ cross section were also obtained for the production of Na/sup 22/, F/sup 18/, N/sup 13/, C/sup 11 /, and Be/sup 7/ from aluminum and for Be/sup 7/7 from carbon in this energy region. These cross sections are essentially independent of energy between 6 and 28 Bev. An exception is Be/sup 7/ production from aluminum, which increases slightly between 3 and 28 Bev. (auth)
