PHAGOCYTOSIS AND CHANGES OF GLYCOGEN CONTENT IN BLOOD CELLS AND HEMOPOIETIC ORGANS OF IRRADIATED ANIMALS (in Russian)

The purpose of the investigation was to study carbohydrate metabolism in biood cells, spleen, lymph node, and liver, and in this connection to show the relation between the process of phagocytosis, occurring in hemopoietic organs, and intracellular carbohydrate metabolism under the influence of irradiation. The experiments were made on white mice irradiated with an x-ray dose of 800 r. The glycogen content was estimated by the method of A. L. Shabadash. In one to three hours after irradiation an abrupt drop of glycogen content in the peripheral blood neutrophils is observed, whtle in the imprints of the liver and spleen there is reported a great number of glycogen-saturated leukocytes. A certain dependence of glycogen content in neutrophils upon the degree of phagocytosis is established. As phagocytosis becomes intensified, the glycogen content in neutrophil leukocytes decreases. The deficiency of glycogen in neutrophils is accompanied by its presence among cells (in the liver and spleen imprints). A greater glycogen content is reported to be observed in the phagocyte plasma.
