Histochemical methods have been used to study some disorders of nucleic acids (DNA, RNA), peroxidase, fats and glycogen metabolism in blood cells; a disorder of nucleic acids, organic and inorganic iron exchange was studied in the hemopoietic system (spleen and lymph node). Morphological determinations of the peripheral blood cells and of the hemopoietic system were carried out simultaneously. The experiments were made on 130 white mice. The animals were exposed to a single lethal dose of 800 r. Investigations were conducted with the time intervals of 5, 20 min and 1, 2, 12, 24, 48, 72 hr. The decrease in the RNA concentration begins 5 min after irradiation and the RNA completely disappears by the time the animals die. The disorder in the DNA synthesis begins in 20 min, yet the DNA is present in the ceils till the very end. In 5 min after irradiation a momentary increase in the number of peroxidase granules is reported. Immediately after irradiation the glycogen content s of the blood cells begin to decrease, in 12 hr its contents increase; in the liver neutrophils and spleen the decrease begins just after 3 hr, increasing by the 12th hr. The fluctuations in the fat content begin after 3 hr, increasing by the 12th hr. Following the irradiation, the organic iron content decreases. Inorganic iron is detected in the spleen in 3 hr. Morphological changes become evident in one hr foIlowing the irradiation, and they are irtensified as the radiation sickness progresses. (auth)
