METHOD OF DETERMINING THE SPIN AND PARITY OF A PION-HYPERON RESONANCE

The reaction sequence, M/sub 1/ + N/sub 1/- Y/sup */ + M/sub 2/; Y/sup */ - Y + pi /sub 1/; Y - N/sub 2/ + pi /sub 2/ is considered, where M/sub 1/ and M/ sub 2/ are spinzero mesons, N/sub 1/ and N/sub 2/ are nucleons, Y is a LAMBDA or SIGMA /sup +/ particle, and Y/sup */ is a pion-hyperon resonance of spin 1/2 or 3/2. The general form of the angular distribution of the particles pi /sub 1/ and N/sub 2/ is written down under the assumption that final state interactions between the meson M/sub 2/ and the Y/sup */ decay particles may be neglected. If any polarization of the hyperon Y exists, the spin and parity of the resonance Y/ sup */ may be determined from this angular distribution. The structure of the spin density matrix of the Y/sup */ is discussed. (auth)
