LUMINESCENCE OF LiF CRYSTALS ACTIVATED BY URANYL NITRATE

The luminescence and the thermoluminescence of LiF crystals were investigated, using an x-ray tube with a W anode and a Be window for excitation. Spectrophotometric data showed that the maxima of the absorption bands shift toward the longer wavelengths when the concentration of the activator was increased. The data were similar to those obtained with CaF/sub 2/-U/sup 6+/; the luminescence of the phosphors activated by uranyl salts is assumed to be due to the radiation of the U ion transformed by the crystal lattice. At high concentrations of the activator (sbout 0.2%), a new band with a maximum at 5700 A is formed resulting in a violet coloration of the crystal. The spectral compostion of the thermoluminescence of pure LiF differs from the spectrum of the activator. A thermopeal has been observed at 100 deg C; the activator quenches the thermopeaks at 160 to 200 deg C which are quite strong in the pure crystals. While the ratio of thermopesks is shifted under the influence of the activatcr, no new thermopesks are formed by it. (TTT)
