The x-ray luminescence and thermoluminescence due to Eu ions in CaF/sub 2/ were investigated. Thermoluminescent glow curves of CaF/sub 2/ single crystals containing several different concentrations of europium were measured between 4.2 and 400 deg K. Spectral analysis of the two major glow peaks at 92 and 240 deg K shows that the luminescence is due mainly to Eu/sup 2+/ ions. The available evidence suggests the thermoluminescence of Eu/sup 2+/ in CaF/sub 2/ is a hole-type recombination process similar to the generally accepted mechanism for thermoluminescence from trivalent rare-earth ions in CaF/sub 2/. In addition to the Eu/sup 2+/ emission, lines are observed at lower energies in the x-ray luminescence spectra due to Eu/sup 3+/ ions in at least three different symmetry sites. (auth)
