The exchange behavior of uranium, thorium, the rare earths and some other elements towards the strongly basic anion exchanger Dowex 1 in aqueous and methanolic sys tems containing di- or tricarboxylic acids is described. Based on the measurement of the distribution coefficients in such media a method for the separation of uranium from thorium and the rare earths in an aqueous solution containing malonic acid was developed.
