DISCRIMINATION OF LOW ENERGY PROTONS AND ALPHA PARTICLES IN ILFORD KO NUCLEAR EMULSIONS

Journal Article · · Nucl. Instr. Methods

Studying the possibility of discrimination of low energy proton and alpha particle tracks, we examined the grain density distribution of 2.7-Mev proton and 4.5-Mev alpha particle tracks in Ilford KO nuclear emulsions 200 mu m thick developed with an amidol developer in a two-stage development. It is possible to discriminate completely and with certainty the two particles. The mean grain density of proton tracks is (0.48 plus or minus 0.14) grains/ mu m and that of alpha particle tracks is (1.38 plus or minus 0.13) grains/ mu m. The energy resolution of alpha particles amounts to 8.98%. (auth)
