After a summary of the spectral properties of various scintillators, the effect of diverse experimental conditions (preparation of the liquid scintillator, geometry of the scintillator, and scintillator thickness) on the scintillator yield was studied. The complex problem of the effect of temperature of the photomultiplier and the scintillator was then investigated. Various aspects of the inhibiting effect of oxygen on the efficiency of scintillators are examined. Indications on the processes taking part in the energy transfer in scintillators were obtained from the study of the effects of temperature and oxygen. A device for the detection and measurement of soft BETA particles, using liquid scintillators, is described, and its principal characteristics are given. (tr-auth)
