HYPERFINE STRUCTURE OF THE LEVEL 5$sup 2$$P$$sub 1$2/ OF POTASSIUM 39

The hyperfine structure of the 5/sup 2/P/sub 1/2/ level of K/sup 39/ is measured by techniques of optical-radio-frequency double resonance. The magnetic interaction constant a/sub 1/2/ is found to be 8.99 plus or minus 0.15 Mc which leads to the value 4.56 plus or minus 0.3 for the ratio a/sub 1/2//a/sub 3/2/. This is significantly lower than the va lue 5.08 that is predicted by theory. The measured value of the g-factor is 0.665 plus or minus 0.003. (auth)
