The allowed domains of the parameters describing a chiral-symmetry- breaking Hamiltonian belonging to the (3, 3*) direct-sum (3*, 3) direct-sum (8, 8) representations of SU(3) x SU(3) are investigated. In addition to constraints on these parameters arising from spectral-function positivity we employ conditions corresponding to bounds on the ratio f/subK//f/sub pi/ of kaon- to pion-decay constants and on the $pi$$pi$ S-wave I = 0 and 2 scattering lengths. It is found that these constraints are extremely effective in reducing the size of the allowed domains. Particular attention is focused on the Gell-Mann--Oakes-- Renner, Okubo, and Sirlin-Weinstein forms of symmetry breaking, which are special cases of the general (3, 3*) direct-sum (3*, 3) direct-sum (8, 8) scheme.
