THE APPLICATION OF SEALED SOURCE REGULATIONS
Journal Article
·
· Ann. Occupational Hyg.
The health physics measures used by industry to comply with the International Commission for Radiation Protection recommendations and the Ionizing Radiation Regulations are described, including the medical examination requirements and training program. Means of measuring dose are illustrated. Mention is made of containers used, methods of storage, handling, and idertification of isotopes. Fire protection methods are dethiled, and a description of the local safety measures adopted before the introduction of the Regulations is included. All health physics problems are discussed with reference to individual situations arising in a foundry using sealed sources of radiation. Illustrations of the type of equipment used under such approved schemes of work are shown, e.g. the use of isotopes for thickness gaging, checking the level of molten glass in a furnace, and checking the correct flfling of packages. The use of shielding with industrial sources is considered; in most site applications the only protective barrier possible is that of distance. Where it is possible, and the work is repetitive, the radiographic work may be carried out in fixed enclosures and the pieces to be examined are brought to the enclosure. A typical example of this type of enclosure is illustrated. A method of handling radioisotopes is described which helps workers identify the source with the insert rod into which it is initially fitted and kept during its service life. (BBB)
