APPLICABILITY OF THE ELECTRON BEAM WELDING TECHNIQUE TO THE FABRICATION OF PARTICULATE TYPE FUELS

Studies were made on the use of electron-beam welding in the fabrication of plutonium bearing fuel elements. It was concluded that electron-beam welding is applicable to particulate ceramic type elements and offers all the advantages attached to that process. However, the difficulty of manipulation inside glove boxes tends to limits its application. It can, however, be of a great help on account of its versatility, for instance in correcting or repairing welds performed by rougher methods and found to be defective. (P.C.H.)
