IONIZATION ENCOUNTERS OF ELECTRONS WITH IONS AND ATOMS (in Russian)

Journal Article · · Zh. Eksperim. i Teor. Fiz.
OSTI ID:4012831

The single ionization cross sections for Hg/sup +/, Xe/sup +/, Kr/sup +/ , Ar/sup +/, Ne/sup +/, Hg/sup 2+/, Xe/sup 2+/, Kr/sup 2+/, and Ar/sup 2+/ ions ob tained by ionizing atoms with electrons are determined by the crossed ion and electron beam method. The dependences of the effective cross sections for secondary electron ionization of ions on the electron energy of the initial ions are determined. It is shown that ionization of neutral atoms by electron impact involves the excithtion of singly, doubly, and triply charged ions. It is also shown that for an accelerating potential of 2800 v the mass spectrometer background is mainly due to various ionization processes involving metasthble excited ions. (auth)
