CONSTRUCTION AND ABSOLUTE CALIBRATION OF A PHOTONEUTRON STANDARD

Journal Article · · Energia nucleare (Milan)
OSTI ID:4010813
A Ra- gamma -Be photoneutron standard is developed consisting of a 4-cm diameter beryllium sphere carrying at its center 251.8 mg of radium. The calibration experiment is carried out by a physical integration method. The saturation activity is measured for 10% MnSO/sup 4/ aqueous solution irradiated in the absence and in the presence of a lattice of polyethylene tubes filled with gold powder, and the absolute average activity of gold is determined by coincidence measurements. The source strength is found to be (3.11 plus or minus 0.07) x 10/sup 5/ neutrons/sec. (auth)
