COULOMB EXCITATION OF Cu$sup 63$ AND Cu$sup 6$$sup 5$

Journal Article · · Physical Review (U.S.) Superseded in part by Phys. Rev. A, Phys. Rev. B: Solid State, Phys. Rev. C, and Phys. Rev. D
Properties of levels Coulomb excited in /sup 63/Cu and /sup 65/Cu with 7- to 8-Mev alpha particles were investigated. The B(E2)'s for excitation determined from the yields of gamma rays observed in singles and coincidence spectra for the (668 plus or minus 4)-, (961 plus or minus 6)-, and (1323 plus or minus 16)-kev levels in Cu are, respectively, (1.16 plus or minus 0.12), (3.49 plus or minus 0.34), and (4.0 plus or minus 0.5) X 10/sup -50/ e/ sup 2/ cm/sup 4/; for the (771 plus or minus 7)-, (1115 plus or minus 11)-, and (1474 plus or minus 19)-kev levels in /sup 65/Cu, they are (1.02 plus or minus 0.11), (3.45 plus or minus 0.38), and (4.3 plus or minus 0.8) x 10/sup -50/ e/sup 2/ cm/sup 4/. These resul ts give B(E2)'s for decay that are 13 to 16 times the singleparticle B(E2). This similarity of B(E2)'s was predicted by de Shalit for levels that result from the coupling of the odd particle to the first excited state of the even-even core. From angular correlation studies the 961- and 1115-kev levels were assigned spin 5/2 and the 1323-kev level spin 7/2. Mixing ratios obtained from these measurements along with the B(E2)'s establish values of 0.09 and 0.4 (eh/2 Mc)/sup 2/ for the B(M1)'s of the 961- and 1115-kev transitions. (auth)
