CROSS-SECTION FLUCTUATIONS IN THE Al$sup 27$(p,$alpha$)Mg$sup 24$ REACTION

Journal Article · · Nuclear Physics (Netherlands) Divided into Nucl. Phys. A and Nucl. Phys. B

Excitation functions in the differential cross sections at several angles and in the range 9 to 12 Mev were obtained for the /sup 27/Al(p, alpha )/ sup 24/Mg reactions leading to the ground and first excited states of /sup 24/Mg. The overall energy resolution was 10 kev. The cross sections exhibit marked fluctuations. There is little if any correlation between the cross sections for the two final states. Correlation functions are used to determine the fluctuation damping coefficient N and the mean level width of the intermediate nucleus GAMMA ; the latter corresponding to a mean excitation of 22 Mev in /sup 28/Si is found to be about 45 kev. The values of N thus obtained agree with those deduced otherwise from application of the cross section probability distribution formula. The experimental angular cross-correlations are studied in the light of recent theoretical estimates. (auth)
