The gamma decay scheme of the 10.43 Mev state in /sup 14/N was investigated by means of the reaction /sup 13/C(p, gamma )/sup 14/N. Apart from the known gamma transitions to the ground state and the 6.44 Mev excited state, a previously unreported gamma transition was found to the J = 2 excited state at 7.02 Mev with an intensity of 8% of that of the ground state transition. A transition to the 7.03 Mev state was also established in the decay scheme of the J/sup pi / = 2/sup +/, 9.17 Mev state by previous work. Furthermore, several weak gamma rays were observed originating from the decay of the 10.43 Mev state. These rays arise from the populations and decays of the lowest odd parity states in /sup 14/N at 5.10, 5.69, and 5.83 Mev and possibly the J/sup pi /= 1/sup +/ state at 3.95 Mev. However, because of their weakness, only the decay mode to the 5.10 Mev state is definitely established. The work presents rather strong evidence that the 9.17 Mev and the 10.43 Mev states have similar eigenfunctions and that these eigenfunctions contain approximately equal contributions from p/ sup -2/ and (2s, 1d), with a small contamination from p/sup 9/f.
