By Compton scattering on magnetically saturated iron, the degree of circular polarization, P/sub c/, of the BETA particle from /sup 203/Hg followed by the 279-kev gamma quanta of /sup 203/Tl was measured. From the value P/sub c/ = --0.23 plus or minus 0.12 and v/c = 0.62, the anisotropic coefficient A = -- 0.37 plus or minus 0.19 was obtained. By comparison between theory and experiment, from the three possible spin values of the ground state of /sup 203/ Hg (1/2, 3/2/, 5/2/), the value 1/2 was excluded. The values 3/2 and 5/2 were both possible on the basis of the measurement, however, according to theoretical consideration the value 5/2 is given preference. (tr-auth)
