Behind the front of a strong shock wave, there is a region containing a hot, highly luminous gas. The loss of energy by radiation leads to cooling of the gas. This cooling was investigated experimentally in shock tubes filled with argon. The rate of cooling is calcutated. An energy balance is set up for the energy radiated by the inert gas, and the system of equations describing the state of the gas behind the wave front is solved. Good agreement was obtained between theory and experiment. (auth)
