Electron density and ion temperatures in the regions 10/sup 14/-- 10/sup 16/ cm/sup -3/ and 10/sup 5/-- 10/sup 8 deg K respectively can be obtained from the Stark and Doppler broadening of spectral lines. Measurements can be performed with a Fabry-Perot etalon which has spacers of thickness less than 1 mm. A simple method is presented for obtaining the time-resolved haifwidth of spectral lines with a time resolution better than 0.1 mu sec during a scan of about 10 mu sec. From the ratio of the minimum and the maximum intensity in the Haidinger pattern, the true half-width of a spectral line can be determined, assuming the spectral line has a Voigt profile. As an example the profiles of the Balmer lines H/sub BETA / and H/sub delta / and of He II lambda 3203 according to the Griem-Kolb-Shen theory, are approximated by Voigt profiles for several ion temperatures. From the full half-width of these profiles the electron density can be obtained. (auth)
