REDUCTION OF POTASSIUM ION BACKGROUND IN TUNGSTEN SURFACE IONIZATION DETECTORS FOR MOLECULAR BEAMS
A technique is described for producing surface ionization detectors which solve the problem of potassium atoms in tungsten (NSA 15: 14494) and which are produced in a manner similar to that of Frazer, Burns, and Barton (NSA supported at each end by hairpin bends of tungsten wire. After an outgassing, the detector was exposed to the vapor in equilibrium with solid W(CO)/sub 6/ at about 35 deg C. The CO was pumped off a few times and a coat of tungsten was deposited on the ribbon and the wire. (L.N.N.)
