FABRICATION OF HIGH-DENSITY UO$sub 2$ FUEL PLATELETS

Journal Article · · Am. Ceramic Soc. Bull.
OSTI ID:4003708
High density U0/sub 2/ fuel element platelets as thin as 0.040 in. were fabricated to precise dimensional tolerances using improved cold pressing and sintering techniques. Densities above 96% of theoretical were obtained by comminution of powder and sintering in H/sub 2/ at temperatures in excess of 1700 deg C. With the addition of small quantities of metal oxides to the UO/sub 2/ powder, densities as high as 99% of theoretical were obtained at 1500 deg C without increase in sintering time. Dimensions of these plates were controlled to plus or minus 0.003 in. in the laboratory and to plus or minus 0.002 in. in pilot plant prcduction runs. (auth)
