SOLID STATE POLYMERIZATION OF FORM-ALDEHYDE INDUCED BY IONIZING RADIATION
Irradiation with gamma rays or electrons of solid formaldehyde at --196 deg C induces polymerization, which proceeds explosively on warming. The G value for conversion was much larger than those of any other radiation polymerizations. Polyoxymethylene of very high molecular weight was obtained in bulk snd in solid solution irrespectively of dose rate and irradiation time. Acrylonitrile was found also to polymerize explosively on warming the solid monomer irradiated at -- 196 deg C. It was concluded thnt ions or highly excited molecules formed from the irradiation at --196 deg C are trapped in the solid state and that they initiate the polymerization on warming the irradiated solid monomer.
