Using the quantum treatment, the circular polarization of gamma radiation was related to the projection of the spin of the gamma quantum in the direction of its impulse; the orientation of the projection was dependent on its direction. If the probabilities of the orientations are equal, no polarization occurs. Circularly polarized quanta are emitted by polarized nuclei; in the simplest case the spin of the original polarized nucleus if j/sub 1/ = 1 and after radiative transition it becomes zero, j/sub 2/ = 0. Circular polarization of gamma quanta after BETA decay is due to the nonconservation of parity in weak interactions. Lee and Yang considered the possibility of measuring the circular polarization of the gamma quanta accompanying BETA decay in order to examine the nonconservation of parity but they assumed that the experimental difficulties are too high. The whole problem and its treatment in the literature are reviewed within the framework of permissible transitions. The available data on circular polarization of a number of isotopes are tabulated. These studies made it possible to determine the absolute values and the phase relationships of the matrix elements. (Review article, 100 references). (TTT)
