SPIN-LATTICE RELAXATION IN CERIUM MAGNESIUM NITRATE AT HELIUM TEMPERATURES: A NEW PROCESS
Measurements of the spin-lattice relaxation time T/sub 1/ of a single crystal of Ce/sub 2/Mg/sub 3/(NO/sub 3/)/sub 12/ x 24H/sub 2/0 were made in the liquid helium range by the Casimir-- du Pre method at frequencies between 175 and 900 c/sec and d.c. fields of 300, 600, and 1000 gauss. In all fields an extremely rapid variation of T/sub 1/ with temperature was observed. No paramagnetic resonance absorption was observed above lO deg K. The relaxation at the temperatures studied occurs by a two-stage process, each step of which is a single phonon (or''direct'') process. The absolute magnitudes of relaxation times were calculated as T/sub 1/ approximately 10/sup -10/ e/sup 34///sup T/ sec in satisfac tory agreement with experiment. (J.S.R.)
