Anomalous Phonon Scattering Below {ital T}{sub {ital c}} in YNi{sub 2} {sup 11}B{sub 2}C

Inelastic neutron scattering measurements were performed on large volume ({approximately}2cm{sup 3}) single crystals of {sup 11}B substituted intermetallic superconductor YNi{sub 2}{sup 11}B{sub 2}C. With decreasing temperature from room temperature to {ital T}{approximately}30 K, a gradual softening of a phonon spectrum is observed at around {ital Q}=(0.525,0,8), similar to the case of LuNi{sub 2}B{sub 2}C reported by Dervenagas {ital et} {ital al}.[Phys.Rev.B{bold 52}, R9839 (1995)]. In addition, we discovered that an intense new peak appears below {ital T}{sub {ital c}}=14.2 K. The peak intensity of the new peak shows a clear onset at {ital T}{sub {ital c}} and an order-parameter-like temperature dependence of superconductivity. With application of magnetic field, however, the new peak is easily suppressed and disappears by {ital H}={ital H}{sub {ital c}2} ({approximately}4.7 T at {ital T}=5.5 K). These results strongly indicate that this new peak is undoubtedly associated with its superconducting state. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}
