Thin films of the recently discovered intermetallic superconducting compound YNi{sub 2}B{sub 2}C have been grown {ital in} {ital situ} using a magnetron sputtering technique. High quality, {ital c}-axis oriented, films were obtained on MgO substrates held at about 800{degree}C during the sputtering process. The best films showed maximum {ital T}{sub {ital c}}=15.25 K (onset), a transition width of {approx_equal}0.3 K, a room-temperature resistivity of 53{plus_minus}3 {mu}{Omega}cm, a residual resistivity ratio up to {approx_equal}5.4, a low-temperature critical current {ital J}{sub {ital c}}{approx_equal}10{sup 5} A/cm{sup 2} and {ital B}{sub {ital c}2}{ge}6 T. Superconducting films were also obtained on sapphire and LaAlO{sub 3} substrates. {copyright} {ital 1996 American Institute of Physics.}
