Fluid conveying pipes such as risers will be influenced by internal and external fluid pressures, and it is well known that these effects can be covered by use of a so called effective axial tension. In this paper it is shown that the centrifugal forces from the internal flow can be covered by replacing it with an additional term in the axial force resulting in what in this paper is tentatively called combined tension. Some of the most common boundary conditions are discussed, and it is shown that for most cases of practical interest the boundary conditions can be expressed solely in terms of the combined tension.
