Recent progress in the development of new environmentally-safe corrosion inhibitors for aqueous systems, with special emphasis on non-heavy metal, non-phosphorus containing inhibitors, is reviewed. The strengths and weaknesses of currently available technologies and future technical challenges are discussed in the light of increasingly more stringent discharge restrictions.
