The use of chromate as a corrosion inhibitor in near neutral aqueous cooling systems has generally been phased out because of the restrictions on discharge due to toxicity. This has resulted in the increased use of alternative inhibitor systems which have a more desirable toxicity profile. There are many different inhibitor types, therefore, the discussion has been limited to corrosion inhibitors of practical importance. A discussion of corrosion is given and the mechanisms of specific inhibitors on mild steel in neutral aqueous solutions are reviewed.
