Gamow-Teller strength of {sup 26}Mg

We have measured cross sections for ({ital d},{sup 2}He)-induced reactions on {sup 26}Mg at an energy of {ital E}{sub {ital d}}=125.2 MeV. The measured Gamow-Teller strength is significantly smaller than that inferred from ({ital p},{ital n}) reactions. We demonstrate that {beta}{sup +} Gamow-Teller strengths for {ital T}{sub 0}+1 states deduced from ({ital p},{ital n}) reactions may have significant systematic uncertainties due to ambiguities in the large backgrounds that must be subtracted. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}
