The basic equations are formulated and used to study the self-consistent space-time evolution of a intense ultra-short laser pulse and near-backward stimulated Raman scattering (SRS). The spectral intensity of detected in laboratory frame Raman scarrered radiation is determined through the thermal density fluctuations ahead of the pulse by solving the boundary problem in the pulse frame. The results of numerical simulations of self-consistent nonlinear pulse propagation and SRS are presented that confirm our analytical predictions. {copyright} {ital 1996 American Institute of Physics.}
