Spectra of L x-rays emitted by 6 and 15 MeV/u Xe ions interacting with a variety of solid and gaseous targets have been measured with a curved crystal spectrometer. The shape of the spectrum was found to depend strongly on the projectile energy and the physical state of the target. The target atomic number dependence was most pronounced in the case of 15 MeV/u Xe projectiles traveling in low Z solids and gases. Detailed spectral analysis provided estimates of the average projectile charges and the average L- and M-electron populations inside gaseous and solid media. It was found that the average charge of the projectile traveling in a gas is significantly smaller than the corresponding average charge of the projectile traveling in a solid. The present findings confirm previous conclusions about effective charges in gases and solids deduced from stopping power measurements, but yield substantially higher values.
