The first measurement of the reaction {sup 3}He({gamma},p)X using linearly polarized photons is reported. Measurements of differential cross sections and photon asymmetries were extracted for photon energies extending from 195 to 304 MeV. Protons were detected at eight angles spanning the ranges {theta}{sub p} = 20{degrees}-160{degrees}. The photons were produced at the BNL-LEGS facility by backscattering laser light off a 2.5 GeV electron beam. The measurements were compared with a theoretical calculation by J.M. Laget. This diagrammatic approach allows one to isolate specific photon absorption processes including meson exchange, {Delta}-isobar formation, and final state interactions. Absorption mechanisms involving one, two, and three nucleons were included in the calculation. The three-nucleon (3N) processes were found to have a profound effect in the prediction of the cross section and photon asymmetry at proton momenta lying below the two-nucleon absorption (quasideuteron) peak. The addition of 3N absorption brings the theory into good agreement with the cross sections. The asymmetry was found to be very sensitive to these processes but more theoretical work is needed to accurately describe the data.
