The asymptotic D-state to S-state ratio of the {sup 3}He {yields} n + d cluster wave function ({eta}{sub t}) has been determined from measurements of sub-Coulomb ({bar d}, t) tensor analyzing powers. At energies below the Coulomb barrier, the tensor analyzing powers are, to a good approximation, proportional to {eta}{sub t}. Also, at sub-Coulomb energies, theoretical calculations of the ({bar d} t) analyzing powers can be carried out reliably using the distorted-wave Born approximation (DWBA). Therefore, {eta}{sub t} can be determined by comparing the measured tensor analyzing powers to DWBA calculations in which {eta}{sub t} is varied to give a best fit to the measurements. The data set used to determine a value for {eta}{sub t} includes new measurements of the tensor analyzing power T{sub 20} for ({bar d} t) reactions on {sup 119}Sn at incident deuteron energies of 4.9 MeV and 6.0 MeV, and on {sup 208}Pb at 9.0 MeV (for transitions to three different {sup 207}Pb excited states). (New measurements of T{sub 20} for ({bar d}, t) on {sup 119}Sn have also been obtained at 7.0, 8.0, and 9.0 MeV but were not included in the data set used to determine {eta}{sub t}). In addition, the data set includes previous measurements of T{sub 20} and T{sub 21} for several additional reactions and energies. For each of the reactions in the data set, the authors have made full finite-range DWBA calculations of the tensor analyzing powers. The calculations include nuclear tensor potentials as well as long-range tensor potentials that arise from Coulomb interactions. By comparing the calculations to the measurements, they have obtained fourteen statistically independent values of {eta}{sub t}. A weighted mean of the values gives {eta}{sub t} = 0.0431 {+-} 0.0025, where the quoted uncertainty includes statistical and systematic contributions. This result is compared with previous experimental determinations of {eta}{sub t} and with predictions obtained with Faddeev calculations.
