The Naval Research Laboratory is investigating novel coaxial wiggler designs to reduce the beam energy requirements for millimeter wave and far-infrared FELs and to enhance gain and efficiency. Coaxial wiggler configurations under study have the potential to generate high wiggler magnetic fields at short periods with enhanced beam focussing properties. Two coaxial wigglers are currently being examined. The first wiggler design uses both outer and inner bifilar helical current windings. The second design, a Coaxial Hybrid Iron (CHI) wiggler, consists of a solenoid enclosing periodic arrays of ferromagnetic and nonferromagnetic material arranged as an outer ring and inner rod. Preliminary designs of a Ku-band two helix wiggler FEL amplifier and a voltage tunable CHI-based far-IR FEL oscillator will be discussed. A three dimensional slow-time-scale non-linear theory was used for device simulations.
