Fast-wave interaction devices, i.e. gyrotrons and FEL/ubitrons, have many attractive properties for the generation of high power, high frequency microwaves. However, practical devices have been elusive because of magnetic field, voltage, and size requirements. This paper will present a new FEL/ubitron wiggler configuration, the CHI (Coaxial Hybrid Iron) wiggler, under investigation at the Naval Research Laboratory, which has substantial advantages at short periods. The CHI wiggler consists of alternating rings of ferro- and nonferromagnetic materials, surrounding a central rod made up of cylinders of the same materials as the rings but shifted along the axis by half a period. The wiggler field is produced by applying a solenoidal magnetic field to the CHI structure. The electron beam used is an annular beam which travels down the gap between outer rings and the central piece. By varying the parameters of the basic configuration, such as the width of each of the two different rings, their height, shape, etc., one can enhance the performance and tailor it to suit one`s needs. Among these possible enhancements are a higher peak transverse field and a greater control over the rate of change in wiggler field vs. applied field. The results of parameter studies on the basic CHI geometry will be presented. Beam dynamics have been studied analytically and computationally. Characteristics such as {alpha}, the ratio of perpendicular to parallel velocities of the particles, and beam focusing, have been studied.
