There are some very significant potential advantages with the use of magnetic bearings. Examples include improved reliability, active control of rotor dynamics and elimination of the safety and environmental concerns associated with fluid lubricants. However, experience has shown that there are also pitfalls associated with their use, often arising from an inadequate understanding of system design and integration requirements. This paper reviews the benefits and pitfalls associated with magnetic bearings and offers some suggestions for avoiding those pitfalls in new projects.
