Although boiler tubing failures are the number one cause of forced outages of coal-fired power plants for electric utilities, no synthesis approach has been reported in the literature for such failures. This paper presents an integrated and practical synthesis mechanism for boiler tubing life prediction and life extension of coal-fired power plants. The objective of the synthesis is to maximize boiler availability and efficiency and minimize operating, repair and upgrading costs. Major causes and components of boiler tubing failures are integrated within the proposed synthesis. The causes include corrosion, erosion and defects in material, welding, design, analysis and optimization. The components include waterwalls, economizers, superheaters and reheaters.
