The atmosphere control, especially that of potential control, is quite important to enable quality heat treatment within the protective atmosphere. Those atmospheres are mostly composed of several element gases, and their control measures depend on one or two gas analysis, like dew point for water vapor, infrared analysis for CO{sub 2} and oxygen O{sub 2} sensor for oxygen concentration. However, measurement of one gas element is not sufficient to get correct carbon potential for relative chemical reactions and equilibrium between the gases present is not simple. Also the carburizing and carbonitriding phenomena do not completely follow the equilibrium reactions. Therefore, there remains a necessity to know and use reliable methods to ensure the exact carbon potential directly or indirectly.
