Theoretical analysis of flow induced vibrations of a pipe resting on elastic foundation is carried out. The total potential energy (kinetic and strain energies) of the pipe, fluid flowing in the pipe and the supporting foundation is minimized by variational principle with respect to the lateral deflection of the pipe and the vertical displacement of the foundation and the resulting partial differential equations, governing the lateral vibrations of the pipe and the foundation system and corresponding boundary conditions, are presented. These equations are solved to obtain the first and the second dimensionless natural frequencies and the corresponding mode shapes. The effect of the flow velocity and the foundation parameters on the stability of lateral vibration is studied. The results show that the critical flow velocities increase with the increase of the rigidity of the foundation.
