Energy and the environment: Creating new industries

Journal Article · · Solar Today

During the past 20 years, the USA has enacted some of the world`s most comprehensive legislation for protecting and preserving its environmental heritage. Arguments continue whether these laws impose intolerable burdens on American companies, putting them at a global disadvantage or whether they are prudent, conservative management of the natural resources upon which our industries are built. Respected industry analysists are, however, convinced that renewable energy technologies - including photovoltaics, wind and biomass-derived ethanol - will be a firm part of a growing `green` economic base. A recent report predicts that by 2050 renewable energy resources may contribute almost as much to global energy demand as coal, oil, natural gas and nuclear combined. This article discusses the ramifications of the new industries to the US and its industrial economy.
